A round of DTL consists of 25 targets shot from five shooting stations set on a 15 metres arc from the trap. Targets are voice released from a single oscillating trap and travel approximately 46 meters at an angle no greater than 22.5 degrees either side of centre at an average speed of 43 MPH.

Competition shooting has a number of various events, the most common being, Double Barrel, Pointscore, Single Barrel, Handicap and Double Rise. The number of targets shot at in an event can range from 15 to 100.
